Hugs!

I’ve seen the poem “Hugs” in various forms over the years, and a search for it on the Internet will reveal other variations. I could not determine the author. All the versions I’ve ever seen are by “anonymous”. He or she must have been a prolific writer. But none of the versions seemed to flow well, or build on previous lines. They were all jumbled up. So I rewrote it, gave it some direction, and this is my version of the popular poem, Hugs.

It’s amazing what a hug can do.
A hug can cheer folks when they’re blue.
A hug can say, “I love you so”
or, “Gee, I hate to see you go”.

A hug says, “Welcome back again!”
or “Great to see you!” – “Where ya been?”
A hug can ease a small child’s hurt
When she has fallen in the dirt.

A hug will cross the language barrier
and make the saddest day seem merrier.
A hug says you don’t have to worry.
Without words, it says “I’m sorry.”

Hugs are sweet for sisters and mothers
Great for fathers, swell for brothers,
Kittens crave them. Puppies love them
Grandparents give many of them.

Chances are some favorite Aunts
love them more than potted plants.
A hug delights and warms and charms,
That must be why we all have arms.

The hug! There’s just no doubt about it,
We could never live without it.
So stretch those arms without delay,
And GIVE SOMEONE A HUG TODAY!
